The mountain is part of the Virungas volcanic chain and has several distinct zones, varying slightly from dry western slopes to wet eastern slopes. The zones start at about 1,300 meters and continue to the summit at 4,507 meters; These include subtropical montane forest, orthotropic bamboo forest, orthotropic cloud forest, orthotropic moorland forest, and highly tropical meadows and forests.

The summit is covered in snow and may be covered by a unique lenticular cloud, a rare sight that adds to the mystical quality of the summit. Along the way, you’ll pass Dian Fossey’s burial shrine and may even spot some of the various wildlife that lives on the mountain.
