Sustainable Tourism in Gorilla Trekking Safaris to Rwanda

Because there are so few on the planet, each loss of a gorilla brings this precious species one step closer to extinction. Conservation activities in recent years, including aggressive anti-poaching efforts and close monitoring, have resulted in a slow increase in wild mountain gorilla numbers. Even primate migrations, designed to promote understanding and protection of the species, are offered to the public under extremely strict protocols that are consistently enforced without hesitation. However, much remains to be done before the world can feel secure about the future of these primates.

As some of the world’s most valuable mammals, mountain gorillas are now able to roam their natural habitats relatively undisturbed. With limited space to feed and thrive, gorillas have found solitude in sanctuaries in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rangers work tirelessly as sentinels, always on the alert and searching for anyone intent on harming or capturing a gorilla. The high level of protection that surrounds these African primates means that relatively few people get to see these animals in the wild. However, those who do understand that the experience is much more than an occasional safari activity: it is indeed a rare privilege.

Volcanoes National Park

In the heart of central Africa is found the Volcanoes National Park, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat, wrote the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey “are great, old volcanoes towering almost 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest – the Virungas”.

Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range home of the endangered mountain range– home of the endangered mountain gorillas and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems.

Which embrace evergreen and bamboo forests, open grassland, swamp, and heath. Volcanoes National Park is named after the chain of dormant volcanoes making up the Virunga Massif: Karisimbi– the highest at 4,507mBisoke with its verdant crater lake, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura

Mountain Gorilla Groups/Families in Rwanda – Gorilla Trekking Safaris Rwanda

The senses are heightened as your guide points out that your group is close to a family of isolated magnificent mountain gorillas. The slightest rustle of leaves draws your attention to the dense foliage directly in front of you. Following his guide’s careful instructions, he silently steps forward and kneels. Dark green vegetation frames a surreal and utterly mesmerizing scene: a giant silverback male sits silently watching over his gorilla family. He seems a bit out of touch, but his intuition tells him he’s secretly alert.

Near the dominant giant are two females and several young preening and nibbling on juicy bamboo shoots. Just inches above them, a tiny baby is struggling to cling to a branch. You smile deeply at his clumsy agility and determination. They sit in awe of the gorillas for the next 60 minutes, capturing every possible moment on camera. Human behaviors and intimate relationships between primates give them a permanent place in your heart and mind.

Who is Allowed to Trek Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda? Age Limit For Gorilla Trekking Tours

When your guide tells you it’s time to leave the gorillas behind, you’ll feel like you’re leaving members of your own family behind. For our guests, mountain gorilla trekking safaris in Rwanda are educational and bittersweet, but always the best holiday experience in Rwanda’s mountain forest parks. Guests are required to follow well-defined protocols to ensure a first-class experience with the Rwandan mountain gorillas.

Guests must be at least 15 years old and in excellent physical condition. The health requirements are not only to meet the demands of the trek but also to protect the gorillas from flu, colds, or any other infectious disease that can be transmitted from humans to primates. When you are near the gorillas, your guide will ask you to stay at least seven meters (22, feet) away from the family. This requirement ensures that the gorillas do not feel threatened and that any diseases are not transmitted to the guests.

The Rwanda Development Board, which is responsible for protecting mountain gorillas, has a set limit of 80 permits per day for guests wishing to go on hikes to see the primates. We recommend planning as this is the most popular activity with visitors to Rwanda and permits sell out very quickly. If you would like to include mountain gorilla trekking safaris in your nature Rwanda tour, your Deks Safaris trip planner will arrange the permit, the cost of which is included in your personal Africa Safari package.

Why gorilla trekking Tours to Rwanda? As compared to Congo and Uganda.

During your gorilla trekking safaris in Rwanda – Volcanoes National Park, we recommend wearing long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy boots designed for traversing muddy, steep, and rough terrain. You should also bring thick gloves and a walking stick. Those looking to hire a porter to help with camera gear and provide assistance if you need extra assistance on the trails should also bring some cash. On the day of your trek, you’ll be assigned to a group of people of similar ages and fitness levels.

Guests aged 45 and over are generally placed in a group that stays near the base of the mountains, while younger, more athletic guests are placed in groups that undertake more challenging hikes at higher elevations. This has made gorilla trekking safaris to Rwanda the most and easiest to access in Africa. Your group will be assigned to one of 10 gorilla families. If you are familiar with the mountain gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park, you can request a group scheduled for that particular primate family. Before starting your gorilla-watching trip, you will be briefed on proper trekking etiquette and mountain gorilla spotting to maximize your enjoyment of the experience. You should expect to return to base in the early afternoon.

While mountain gorilla trekking safaris in Rwanda offer our guests a tranquil jungle experience, many guests also want a fast-paced primate activity to top off their adventure vacation. Luckily, Rwanda is home to several smaller species that will keep you entertained with their antics and constant movements in the trees, including the rare and endangered golden monkeys, a subspecies of the more common blue or syke monkeys. These primates roam freely at higher altitudes, and their most distinctive feature is their deep golden-orange eyes framed by a short, soft gray coat, a black nose stripe, and off-white whiskers around the mouth.

Compliments to Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Rwanda – Deks Safaris & Tours

The spectacular primate coloration continues with long, orange, and black speckled fur on the face and a black tuft of fur on the top of the head. The neck, arms, and legs are covered in black fur, while the back is covered in golden-orange fur that matches the eyes and extends to most of the tail except for a black tip. Golden monkeys have personalities as colorful as their costumes. They spend most of their time scurrying through the branches of the
Forest canopy, only stopping occasionally to nibble on something tender or just to catch a glimpse of the onlookers from the ground.

The Golden monkey Trek in Volcanoes Park is easier to fit into your bush tour as the Rwandan government has no cap on the number of visitors per day. However, the monkeys are rare and critically endangered, so we encourage you to take similar precautions as those required when mountain gorilla trekking. Guests are divided into groups of eight or fewer, with each group assigned to one of the usual golden monkey troupes. Each troop has 80-100 members, with the first troop numbering and usually stationed at the foot of Mount Sabyinyo.

Photographers should be patient with gold monkeys, as their dense foliage and rapid movements make photography difficult; rarely will you have the opportunity to photograph a golden monkey on the forest floor. Rwanda is also home to many other primates that you will see during your activities, but planning hikes specifically for mountain gorillas and golden monkeys will give you the best chance of seeing both of these rare and endangered species.
