Day 2: Shoebill Stork Tracking in Mabamba Swamp – Fly to Kasese

Fly to Kasese and Transfer to Kibale Forest

Your day begins early with a scenic drive to Mabamba Swamp, a Ramsar-listed wetland located on the northern shore of Lake Victoria. Here, you will board a traditional wooden canoe, gliding silently through papyrus-lined channels in search of the elusive shoebill stork, one of the world’s most sought-after bird species. Other wetland bird species like the African jacana, malachite kingfisher, and blue-breasted bee-eater are also commonly sighted.

Following this magical birding expedition, you will transfer back to Entebbe for your scheduled domestic flight to Kasese Airstrip, located near the Rwenzori Mountains. The scenic flight offers spectacular aerial views of Uganda’s lush countryside and crater lakes.

Upon landing, a private driver will transfer you to Turaco Treetops Lodge, nestled at the edge of Kibale Forest National Park. This eco-luxury lodge offers a perfect blend of comfort, nature, and panoramic forest views, making it an ideal base for the next day’s primate adventures.

Day 3: Full-Day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience & Bigodi Wetland Walk

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience & Bigodi Wetland Walk

Today is dedicated to a truly immersive primate experience. After an early breakfast, you will head into Kibale Forest with a team of researchers and trackers for the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX). Unlike standard chimp tracking, this unique activity allows you to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated chimpanzee family, observing their behavior from the moment they leave their nests, feed, groom, patrol, and even display social behaviors in their natural environment.

This deep wildlife experience not only offers incredible photo opportunities but also promotes a profound understanding of chimpanzee ecology and conservation efforts in Uganda. You’ll return to the lodge for a warm lunch and some rest.

In the afternoon, embark on a guided Bigodi Swamp Walk, a community-based conservation initiative that offers fantastic birding and encounters with monkeys such as red colobus, L’Hoest’s, and black-and-white colobus. The walk also includes interactions with local community members, giving you insights into their traditions, crafts, and conservation initiatives.

  • Accommodation: Turaco Treetops Kibale Lodge

Day 4: Scenic Drive to Bwindi Forest – Batwa Cultural Experience

Batwa Cultural Experience

After breakfast, check out and enjoy a scenic road transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, passing through the rolling hills, crater lakes, and banana plantations of western Uganda. The changing landscapes, terraced highlands, and small bustling towns provide a fascinating window into rural Ugandan life.

In the afternoon, you will engage in a heartwarming Batwa Cultural Experience, a guided interpretive walk led by Batwa elders and guides. The Batwa pygmies, believed to be among the first inhabitants of the forest, will share their traditional stories, songs, hunting techniques, and medicinal knowledge, offering a respectful and moving cultural immersion. Their resilience and efforts to preserve their culture in the face of displacement highlight the deep human history embedded in this ancient forest.

You will then retreat to Engagi Gorilla Lodge, perched on a forested hillside offering sweeping views of the misty jungle. Unwind by the fireplace or enjoy dinner with views of the treetops, where gorillas may roam.

Day 5: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – Lodge Leisure Time

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After an early breakfast and a short briefing at the park headquarters, you’ll set out for the highlight of your 6-Day Uganda Primates Safari Experience —the Mountain Gorilla Trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Accompanied by an experienced ranger guide and trackers, you’ll trek through the dense foliage and steep ridges of the forest in search of a habituated gorilla family. The trek may take between 2 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. Once found, you’ll spend one awe-inspiring hour observing them as they feed, rest, groom, and interact. The emotion of locking eyes with a silverback or watching a playful infant clamber through the vines is profoundly moving and unforgettable.

Return to the lodge for a well-deserved lunch and a leisurely afternoon to rest, reflect, or enjoy a massage as you soak in the tranquility of Bwindi’s jungle sounds.

  • Accommodation: Engagi Gorilla Lodge

Day 6: Morning Leisure and Domestic Flight to Entebbe

Departure

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the lodge as you take in your final views of Bwindi’s enchanting landscape. Depending on your flight schedule, you may opt for a short forest walk or spend the morning lounging on your private veranda.

Later, transfer to Kihihi Airstrip for your scheduled domestic flight to Entebbe International Airport, where you’ll connect to your onward flight home. If time allows, a farewell meal at a lakeside restaurant near Entebbe can be arranged upon request.
